Restorative Yoga

Restorative yoga is a gentle, slow, still style of yoga that involves long, passive holds in a series of 4-6 restful poses. Yogis are often supported by props to enhance or deepen their experience and achieve a state of total relaxation and release.

A Slower Paced Challenge

Is Restorative yoga right for you?

Restorative yoga classes are based on the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar, a foremost yoga teacher who pioneered the use of props to support the body, enhance alignment and allow for the accessibility of yoga for everybody.

Most restorative yoga classes include a combination of therapeutic elements like essential oils, touch assistance, guided meditation and soothing music. They are the perfect supplement to more active classes like hot yoga or vinyasa yoga and a great recovery tool for those overcoming illness or injury.

Yogis of all levels will benefit from a rejuvenating restorative yoga class. It’s one of the best ways to counter a fast-paced, stressed-out life off the mat. Restorative yoga helps balance the mind and body, relieve tension and anxiety, improve the immune system, stretch deep fascia, increase flexibility and pave the way for meditation. Are those enough reasons to get to your mat?

The instructor was very patient and encouraged me to listen to my body.

Why practice Restorative yoga at YogaWorks?

YogaWorks offers a wide range of Restorative yoga classes, each with their own special touch. In addition to more mellow offerings like Gentle Yoga, Yin Yoga and Urban Zen, YogaWorks Restorative yoga classes are an excellent way to de-stress, reset and and simply be. All of YogaWorks’ restorative yoga offerings are appropriate for beginners. The longer, slower format means plenty of time uncovering the unique benefits of each pose with the occasional personalized assistance of an expert instructor.

While YogaWorks restorative yoga classes are not as physically challenging as some of our other offerings, yogis will experience deep sensations that bring latent energy and emotion to the surface. Being still in these surrendering moments can be cathartic and empowering, but it’s not always “easy.” With the challenge of stillness comes the reward of release.

YogaWorks restorative yoga teachers are skillfully trained to create a comfortable, safe, tranquil environment in each and every class. The elongated holds mean more time to devote to individual students. Many of our restorative yoga instructors are certified in aroma and massage therapy, bringing their unique expertise and love of healing directly to your mat.

As with all our classes, we recommend beginner yogis start with a level 1 or 2 Restorative Yoga class, but most practitioners will find our restorative yoga offerings are accessible at any level.
